11.1 - Churlish

When & Where: I was watching Key & Peele on YouTube, and during one of the sketches they performed called "Substitute Teacher," the main character said (about one of the students in the class), "Insubordinate! And churlish."

Definition: According to merriam-webster.com churlish means, "marked by a lack of civility or graciousness; surly."

Level of Familiarity: I haven't heard this word before, so I wasn't sure what he meant by it. Actually, while watching the video, I wasn't entirely sure what word he was saying. I had to play it a few times before I heard him correctly.

Reflective Commentary: Adjectives are always useful. I don't know how this word fits into the literacy profession, but it might be good to use during a reflection of student behavior in class. I think that in the video the teacher was overreacting a bit (haha), so I wouldn't condone that particular style of classroom management. Churlish is a good word, though. Maybe he could have used that as a teachable moment?
