When & Where: I read this word last week while sorting through papers and notes from when I was an undergraduate student.
Definition: According to merriam-webster.com, hegemony means the social, cultural, ideological, or economic influence exerted by a dominant group.
Level of Familiarity: This one should have been familiar to me, and although I have seen it before I was not sure what it meant. The notes I found it in were from an education class I took, so I assumed it had something to do with issues of social justice. That's as far as I got with it before looking up the definition.
Reflective Commentary: As a teacher, this is an important word to know and to understand. Hegemony plays a role in power structures in schools which seek to maintain educational practices that marginalize some students while privileging others.
